Hidden Public Health Problem
Child sexual abuse is a hidden public health problem that happens across all races, religions, and classes, which can have life-long consequences affecting the psychological, physical, behavioral, spiritual, and interpersonal well-being of victims.
Approximately 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7-10 boys will be sexually abused and/or exploited before the age of 18.
The majority of abuse (90-95%) is perpetrated by people well-known to children, including family members, friends, and acquaintances, including those tasked with the care and protection of children to include babysitters, coaches, and teachers.
Child sexual abuse is predicated on building trust of a child and those near the child in order to abuse and sustain the abuse through silencing and grooming techniques, thus inhibiting disclosure and contributing to under reporting.
